Cllr Shasha Khan, Green Party councillor for Hooley, Merstham and Netherne, has been working hard to bring a bus service to Netherne-on-the-Hill.

The focus of the campaign has been to convince TFL to extend the 463 bus route, which currently terminates at Coulsdon South station, 1.8 miles south to Netherne-on-the Hill

In December, Cllr Khan and campaigners presented a petition with 552 signatures to the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan

Shasha said, “Following Surrey County Council’s (SCC) decision to cancel the school bus, extending the 463 from Coulsdon South is vital for schoolchildren, the elderly and commuters.”

City Hall are expected to respond in early 2024.

Cllr Shasha Khan, Green Party councillor for Hooley, Merstham and Netherne organised a meeting with East Surrey Rural Transport and Netherne residents to explore ways to bring a shopping bus into the village.

With some careful budgeting, a service was successfully introduced.

Netherne is still waiting for TFL to respond to it’s petition to extend the 463 bus to Netherne.

Netherne-on-the-Hill is a residential area of around 2000 people situated to the east of the A23 between Merstham and Coulsdon.

Netherne is currently not served by any public transport, despite TFL running services in the near, but not near enough, vicinity.

Netherne is almost 2 miles south of Coulsdon South railway station within the Transport for London (TfL) area.

Additionally two TFL bus routes, 405 and 463 serve surrounding towns including Coulsdon, and Redhill and Merstham to the south.

However, for the people of Netherne the nearest stop is a long and steep walk of around 900 metres from the village.

A simple and easy solution which would go a long way to filling Netherne’s public transport hole and relieving the residents car dependency would be for a simple extension to the existing TFL 463 bus route.

This would link the nearly 2,000 people who live in Netherne to Coulsdon South station and the wider public transport network.

Councillor Shasha Khan for the East Surrey Green Party has been campaigning vigorously for the residents of Netherne-on-the-Hill including petitioning Mayor Sadiq Khan directly.
